Witness Action Taken: Why Did It Take SMOKE's Recent Hiccup For Us To Pay Attention?

6 months ago

After last week with the stumble the SMOKE blockchain took, I decided that now that things are rolling better, that I would look into the witnesses, their contributions, who's still active and what they do or can do for the platform.

Here are just some of my votes.

While we are allowed 30 votes, I have only fulfilled 17 of mine. Over the weekend I went through the ones I had chosen over the last fourteen months on the blockchain and discovered quite a few had been disabled. So if I had voted for them, I immediately removed my vote. No sense in wasting a vote, right?

So I Have To Ask The Community & Members...

What Do You Look For In A Witness?

My Personal Witness Beliefs...

I have stated in the past, numerous times, that I am not a behind the scenes person. I know little about IT development. I know next to nothing about HTML and coding. I am writer. I am a grower. I know almost nada about what it takes to be a witness. I like to leave that to the people who do know. Who do understand. And who can help the SMOKE blockchain thrive, advance and continue to grow.

While I still have some more witnesses to check up on that I have voted for in the past, I am also looking into new witnesses who are emerging after the fiasco last week.

We tend to vote for a witness and that's that. We never give it another thought; that is until the blockchain hiccups or breaks. Then we are all over that business!

We complain. We make remarks about where are they? We tend to be snarky or snide because our toy is broken and mom and dad (AKA the witnesses) are out on a date or at work and can't fix it right now!

Yes, I did that too. You weren't the only one.

How Dare They Leave Us High (no pun intended) & Dry!

Some of us flooded the Discord group and kept asking... When's SMOKE gonna be up? Where's the active witnesses? We were admittedly having SMOKE withdrawals. Every day that passed we lost SMOKE and SMOKE power. Our SMOKE world was crumbling down and we couldn't do anything but watch it happen and rue the day that the witnesses had abandoned us!

So if you were like me, as soon as SMOKE was up and running again, you opened the Vote For Witness tab on your homepage and started sifting through the actives and inactives. You changed your votes. Or perhaps you signed on and became a witness (and to those of you who did, I commend you as I could NEVER do that).

So what Witness action did you take? Change your votes? Become a witness? If you are a new witness, let me know so I can check you out. Tell me what you look for in a witness too while you're here.

Idk about the others, but I was unfortunately locked up over cannabis charges.

I am planning a move and not messing with it until said move, so I am bringing much more stability than before to the table.

I've been through enough.

It also seems that my being released was perfect timing (If you can even try to shed any positive light on the situation...), because it had only been days since the stall, not week/months to where I wouldn't have been able to help get things back to normal. I am able to run 2 solid witnesses now and they will not be cancelled due to non-payment again.
Enough of the month-to-month, I made a solid year investment into SMOKE as a dual witness.

There's really no excuse to be made here, I made poor decisions and it cost me my freedom for a time. I won't be making that mistake again. We have so many options now.

I also run a second witness now, @trichomes, and have paid my DigitalOcean fees in advance for a year. (My witness went down before the chain stall, due to non-payment while I was incarcerated.)

This should ensure that the issues I have personally had in the past, do not arise again. I am also looking at a different hosting company for my 2nd witness, in the event that D.O. goes down.

I may not have done any real development on the blockchain thus-far... but since I joined:

(420 days ago tomorrow/later today! :D)

I have had downtime of about 3~ months in total. That means since Sept of last year, I have only been down 3 months and it was due to legal issues both times.

I would also like to point out that within a day of being free again, I had my witness up within 20-30 mins of following the guide again from scratch. On the new v0.0.7 build as well, following the new v1.5 guide provided. :) One minor hiccup, I simply forgot to import my active key to wallet, something I easily troubleshooted within minutes of it happening. :P

Where these issues would have required major assistance in the past, I was able to get my witness back up and updated within half an hour and I think that's pretty good for someone who was a complete newbie in the beginning. ;)

On a completely side note...:

Has anyone ever been incarcerated either since they started any sort of witnessing?... Did you start to dream in code at times? See the blocks in that black box with the white words flowing down it?...
:D
I think my mind was longing for home and the things familiar to me. It's not the least bit enjoyable in there...

I'd be REAL interested to hear stories about this topic!

We weren't really on a date.

We complain. We make remarks about where are they? We tend to be snarky or snide because our toy is broken and mom and dad (AKA the witnesses) are out on a date or at work and can't fix it right now!

We were mostly trying to manage to get everyone acknowledged, even communication is distributed across multiple platforms.

A fix was quickly available, within little more than 12 hours which is awesome for a small team. Then the real work started, at least 25% of the available/required witness are Asia-based and it was (past) midnight for them. That was 8-10 hours lost assuming we could reach them asap and life allowed them to fix this $6/month gross revenue act asap as well. While people were ranting, several of us were firing messages to everyone on multiple platforms and hoping they could fix asap. Prioritize a $6/month gross revenue thingamingy, loss making nett ROI.

All in all, we managed to reach everyone and get them to update their server and get back to us, within pretty much 48 hours. So pretty much 60 hours at that point. Then it was merely a matter of finding a time which suited most and a time late European afternoon, around noon in US was chosen as it would cover most witnesses.

But that was Saturday (evening) so some may have been on a date. I know we missed the actual reboot of the chain at 1AM my time and only activated at... 03:30AM. Timezones again, was I on an Asian date? Maybe, maybe not. But dedicated enough to make sure at 03:30AM we were up&running.

Of course, if smoke were at USD 3/SMOKE... you bet everything would have been easier and much faster because most witnesses would spend more time on the platform every day (and it would never have happened because at $4,500/month there would be real competition for top 20 and many would even pay for your witness vote, see EOS BP situation). While it may have been annoying, not only to members - witnesses were as annoyed as everyone - given all elements... I think it all worked out rather well. Best of all... we won new 5 witnesses and one returned.

·

I meant the date comparison as a way that when we were without the platform, we were acting like spoiled children who couldn't have their treat immediately. No harm or hurtful meaning was behind it.

I am forever grateful to all that are witnesses and as being a person who has no knowledge of what being a witness means or what they do, all I can do is silently applaud them from behind my laptop screen and be thankful for their endless hours, financial contributions, etc.

I am the most appreciative person when it comes to the witnesses, developers and other IT careers that I will never fully comprehend.

That statement is very true. I know when steemit was around $8 SBD, witnesses were abound and people were posting once or twice a day. They were definitely more active.

I have found these as new witnesses.
@jackdub
@Trichomes
@bestbuds
@johngalt
@startrail

Am I missing who returned?

@howhigh is back.

Bestbuds is not a witness account according to smoked but @eder-witness is another new witness. So is @velvet-elvis.

And don't worry, I don't think any witness would take offense at that. Unless maybe if one actually went on multiple dates.

·

Yes, @bestbuds is not a witness, but I wanted to clarify to the community that I would be activating both accounts I created a handful of months back, since I was activating one to fill void witness spots. I didn't want anyone wondering who the hell @bestbuds was, the account that is activated and never posts and never votes, but one day might pop up to witness. :P

The witness other than this account is @trichomes and it will not be posting or anything, unless at some point I allow someone else who has worthy content, to post on it... It will simply be a backup to all the witnesses including my own, so that we do not have such low numbers in the future.

Thinking back, I think the reason I even created trichomes was in the hopes of resmoking/doing posts about the best trichome macro shots. A way to give exposure to personal posts, but also show off many people's content all in one, so that people can see more of it all put together. I had some type of idea for it that related to the beauties that are Trichome Macro Shots and also finding positive ways to promote SMOKE at the same time. I think this was around the time people were posting a lot of them and I was just drooling thinking about how wonderful they must be. :)

@BestBuds was originally meant to be an auto-voter that I would power up with my own $ and just manually keep a list of content creators that it would vote for, to basically earn through curation purely, and to promote those deserving.
Although, there doesn't seem to be anything like steemauto or steemvoter here yet, so I haven't really been able to automate it. (I am still behind in learning my coding, hard to re-adjust after being away from things.) I'm hoping there will be though, because manually or automatically, people will vote how they vote, so I'd like to be able to provide consistent support to those who I think regularly produce quality content. Again, as I said, this will still be monitored and manually adjusted. Full automation of anything can be hazardous.

Since times have called for a need in witnesses, I decided that running one simply wasn't enough. The list has been low for too long (Since before I was even gone.) and I figured it was time to at least run one more to keep things like what happened, from happening again. That's why I activated a second. Blockchains stalling/halting/ceasing.... is not something that anyone has a good time with. As you all already know!

lol- RE: the multiple dates!!

Thanks for the names!!! Will be checking them out over next day or so!

·

I meant it when I said I was never leaving this place and that I was dedicated to witnessing here. :)

Life can be a bitch and we all make mistakes, sometimes a few times.... lol. :P

I can host as many witnesses as needed in the future to maintain a stable blockchain, for as long as necessary, too. I have no issue spending my own money to keep things running should other witnesses happen to fall off or should we fail to reach consensus' of any sort.

It's not even that expensive in the first place to host a witness, so I really have no idea why so many have fallen off... It's maybe 5-15$ a month, depending on your provider. That's less than a lot of streaming services... lol

I think I have to update my list as well. :-)

Guilty as charged, I took I hiatus but as you can see for yourself when the hammer dropped and notification went out to update I was on it. Back to posting now but yea sometimes the witnesses can be over looked... it’s good to have some shameless self promotion now and again 😅
