Privacy Concerns about Smoke.io Centralized Advertising

last year

A while back myself and a few other smokers discussed creating a decentralized advertising network within the Smoke blockchain. Smokes blockchain enables these possibilities for positive, and innovative content/monetization avenues.

Recently, Smoke.io decided to go with centralized advertising. The reason why modern advertising on the internet is a terrible thing and can even be dangerous for people, lays within those fine details about that data is collected.

Blockchains store data in an immutable and decentralized way while the same time being transparent. This is not the case with centralized advertisers. These companies have been known to manipulate and even brainwash users all for a profit.

Having advertising that tracks users and sells the data on to other companies, In my personal opinion, is the wrong direction for this front end smoke.io. The reasons are simple, as any users migrating from say steem or other coins will not trust their money (private keys) on a website 3rd party data tracking (centralized advertising).

Do you see advertising on paypal.com? How often does PayPal use these tactics? As that is currently smoke.io's competition. The users of sites like PayPal.com and Bitcoin.com will laugh at smoke.io. And thus whales already here may not understand front ends vs blockchains and dump their smoke as soon as they see this.

Smoke.io's advertiser even brags they have the code base and ability to rape data from users.

I'm confident the future of the Smoke blockchain is not directly dependant on the actions of smoke.io. Just like with steemit.com , users eventually got tired of the interaction, and quickly found alternatives as many have already migrated to d.tube.

You can always create an alternative front end for smoke using one of the many compatible steemit front ends and run no ads on it, but the ad idea was part of the whitepaper so it shouldn't be a surprise.

If you're really worried about privacy, use an ad blocker.

·

I just realized that's why I wasn't seeing the ads. I'm always running an ad blocker.

·
·

Yeah, I can't even function on the internet without an ad blocker. My computer is kind of slow, and the ads just bog it way down.

·

Adblockers do not stop the collection of data.

this myth of digital privacy that yall believe in is hilarious. with or without ads your computer is under surveillance get over it.

the entire internet even these blockchain sites are watched, so your privacy was nullified once you signed on. dont forget this is all made possible by the government that created the inernet...

I also dont agree that folks are going to blow off smoke.io just because of a single advertisement. if you bought smoke to participate in this network and didnt read the white paper hich explicitly says advertisements are allowed and likely then you are in the wrong for being uninformed.

ps D.tube is part of STEEM ecosysyem soo migrating from steemit interface to d.tube is like going from facebook to instagram or google to youtube. nothing changes except for the front end. You would still be on the same companies platform regardless.

The point of SMOKE NETWORK being decentralized is so that people can make their own frontends and run them how they please. smoke.io is just an interface, unlike facebook you can easily make an alterntive interface without pushback and build it how you like

I had questions about this too.

Though I’m 100% with smoke.io for the idea and motivation behind( increasing visibility to the platform). However, I agree to your point, as using a centralized ad service may leave no difference between us and companies like Facebook.

Few questions here is what data will they be monitoring? And will they monitor data from within Smokeio front end or track the data only after the user leaves smoke.io and hits their website?

I’m aware that mantisadnetwork is one of the reputed and largest online ad service for cannabis network, if they have the ability to place monitoring system within smoke.io , then that would be a area of concern. Having said that, things would be much better if we have a decentralized ad service! Maybe we could expect this in future!

A decentralized ad platform, a place where both users of this platform and other cannabis related organizations , merchants etc bid for placing the banner on smoke.io for certain amount of time. And lead the users out of smoke.io to their website and not allow any monitoring system within Smoke.io

That way this place will grow quickly and help many cannabis for sure.

Smoke.io is doing a great job , I should mention that they have improved this UI quite a lot since day one. The problem is smoke.io is now a customer of a centralized service. This means, left unchecked, Smoke.io forfeits being the backbone of a digital advertising revolution. (That being custom json, that being a completely new idea/decentralized service, the advertising DEX.)

I'm indifferent.
I use ublock so I don't even see the ads.
As far as ads existing on websites, the difference between d.tube and youtube is d.tube is taking a cut of the steem, so they wouldn't need to run ads.

If this is for ads on other websites, I personally would be more interested in some kind of direct marketing through dispensaries. Even if I have to buy a sample of 1k business cards with the smoke logo, smoke, get paid, repeat, etc. and see if @stoner can arrange for me to drop them off at one to have them placed in the customer's 'exit bags'.

I'm not sure if direct advertising through dispensaries is on the roadmap or not, it could be and maybe I would just do things in the opposite order. I'm probably cryptoamnesianing it.

The ONLY way to run ads or generate revenue from/with a decentralized blockchain like SMOKE is to build and operate dApps. These ads are not a dapp.

·

D.Tube takes a cut of the steem(8% on our uploader, 10% on theirs) to elimate bidbots. The cut is no where near enough to pay for hosting. This is why we charge 10usd per month to post on DTube through our service. DTube is far beyond decentralized. With multiple front ends. Steempeak.com Busy.org D.Tube Partiko (app) and now two uploaders (ours and Heim's). And these companies(google, etc, those not being google take more data btw) still view your IP address and track it, with or without adblock.

Is this shown anywhere? How are you even estimating their hosting? Do you work for them or something?

No DTube is decentralized I don't work for them. And yes I host videos on DTube itself. For a subscription fee like i just said. Steem doesn't pay them enough to pay for the videos. No where near enough. As most people upload massive 1.5 -2.5gb files and invested nothing into steem, as well as their views invested nothing into steem. The kicker is the majority of users do not host files either. Relying on D.Tube's website/gateway to host the files, who after a week often deletes their videos when they don't have enough views. You can view our code on github and DTubes. It's all open source unlike this advertiser that Smoke.io accepted. https://github.com/techcoderx/ipfsVideoUploader

we are working hard to make DTube a success, but need community help, especially the people that are creating content, need to work together to insure solid playback and also saving hard work

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like they lose them a lot quicker than a week, which is why I'm thinking their costs aren't as high as you think.

Do you have any stats on their ipfs nodes? Are you monitoring what they pin?

In my opinion the future versions of DTube wont host users files at all. Either you host it yourself or you wont host anything (or post videos) at all. And yeah you can go check Dlive's posts before they quit. Kent responded to me of course. (on the flagged post) He is the creator of dlive.io. The website that took a 2 million steem power delegation and milked it and then powered it all down and quit just to help pay overhead on servers. They listed their hosting costs :D. And by "they" you are talking about DTube's temporary hosting users are not supposted to rely on ? Yeah. The burden will always be on USERS not DTUBE.. DTube is just a portal not a host. If you want reliable hosting check out our service https://oneloved.tube/ .

Thank you easyrider. We hope to push these files into the Smoke blockchain , to enable many new forms of content in the future.

I am a customer and also a host, this is how I envision it to be.

·

Advertisers or companies can:

  • join the smoke.io network and stake tokens for SP
  • use SP to reward users for promoting their message

and a lot more things. no to banners. please don't be indifferent ... the community and the safety of the network depends on witnesses that aren't.

·
·

indifference is not a good thing, it's what is bringing the steem price to the floor.

MAybe this is one reason why they created such a huge supply of smoke since they are really banking on ads for revenue. Just a thought and question

·

it's a good thought, I would have to agree.

·

The whitepaper does talk about ads for the network, but as 100% code on the blockchain, not as 'old' style ads, which it describes as the problem set out to address.
