Curation is key; or Self-Votes are wasted votes

Hello smokers!

I've been super stoked about these first weeks on smoke.io.

Lots of new faces, lots of content. Exciting times!

One thing that has been really nice is the curation that's capable. With the different percentages compared to steem this should be interesting to watch as it plays out.

I know I'm loving curation

During this week I had somewhere between 500-650 SP with a vote worth somewhere between 0.030-0.070 depending on my SP/VP at the time.
As you can see, when I curate something that gets a lot of traction I can earn upwards of six times what my voting value was. ie. Getting that 0.321 from @mjgeeks' post when I had around maybe 0.050 (iirc) vote worth means I got around 6.42x my vote back!

So far this has been my best curation (iirc, I could have even better in the first week):

I'm not sure what my vote value was on this, but I think it was around 0.040...That means I made nearly, or more than, 10x my vote value just because I spotted a quality post by @bluntsmasha!

The Moral: Even if you're greedy, you don't want to self-vote!

I'm not even "maximizing" any kind of curation strategy, I'm just watching the Lastest & Greatest Posts and upvoting things that look good and strike my own interest. If I only self-voted and my vote was worth 0.070 all the time, I would only be able to self-vote for 4.900-ish smoke for the week. Yet, without even trying I hit around 4.700 in returns for the week (with VP less than maximum), without any shame!

Knowing this I personally feel that self-votes are a waste, and would promote everyone to spend their VP on others, it can literally come back to you several times more.

I've spotted this too, It's highly worth my time going through the 'created' view to vote on fresh content & help get worthy content noticed

·

Definitely worthwhile and much more rewarding to be able to curate knowing you are going to receive a little more for that extra time and effort. It’s a definite bonus over the Steem platform

·

I think a good majority of what you vote for and boost is totally worth it. It's good that I have the same ideas on what is quality and what is not as you do. Thanks for helping out those who need more of an audience on their posts

·

My vote is not worth anything I guess but I still voted for you. I guess the thought is what is counting here hahaha

·
·

Every vote counts. Although I wish the vote bar showed the 3rd decimal so it was easier to tell how much. I'm too bad at math to be able to tell you. Being smaller you have to be quick and clever if curation is of interest, as I was mentioning to @ivan.

Hmm. Curation is the best business if you know how to go about it.

I never used steemit, this website is pretty cool. I enjoy the payout system, seems quite reasonable. I like the effect on your .gif .

Curation Rocks!
Just from experience Spend just a little more time to read the post, and make a comment - the rewards can snowball or you build SP faster that way. Posts alone don't get as many followers and consequence rewards. Mixing all the curation, comments and be generous with your votes :)
Valiant efforts pay off in the long run!

Wow! This is such an informative post. Wish I had an upvote worth 100 SMOKE. Would have loved to give this post the upvote it deserves. Planning on using this strategy going forward

I started using this strategy after reading it yesterday. Hoping to see positive results next week when rewards are distributed. Will let you know how it went.

·

Great! I'd be interested in the results.
Looks like your account will double the 4.20 based on author rewards alone by the end of the week. I'm not sure how much 4.20 account votes are worth, could be as low as 0.001. With the dust threshold around 0.025, this means that self-voting at that level could definitely be lost completely.
All the more reason to aim for it to come back in the form of curation.
I wish you good luck with you vote timing, may you be followed by whales.

·
·

Thanks buddy. Right now a 4.20 account has a really low value vote especially if self voting. I tested this and noticed no value increase in a vote when self voting. I guess its not worth self voting on such a low valued account. Looking forward to seeing the results from upvoting posts with higher reward payouts. Will let you know how it went.

If they already have a high payout then I don't think you're likely to get much from it.
I thought the ideal was that if you're a smaller guy you have to get in there earlier.
That's been my impression anyway.

Hi @trees

Just wanted to let you know I finally received some payouts and decided to write an article about the experience. You were right. Curating rewards are much higher if you upvote other peoples content. My upvote should be worth less than or equal to 0.001 SMOKE and my highest upvote rewards received was 0.006 SMOKE.

Thanks for the strategy. I am glad to see its actually working. Planning on suing it more often now. You can check out my article here if you are interested in reading it. Regards,

Very good bro! I've since learned how to more or less calculate vote value based on VESTS as well.
It's basically your Smoke Vests (found on http://smoked.online/@cannabiskings ) divided by the pending rewarded vesting shares found on http://smoked.online then multiplied by 2 since each 100% weighted vote is 2% of your VP. And then that's the vote value in VESTS, idk the VESTS/smoke conversion rate. Around 0.9975?ish?
And then multiply by the VP % to know the Current vote, not just the max vote at 100% VP.

Hi @trees
If its not too much to ask. Can you please make a post explaining how to calculate vote value based on VESTS. I tried your formula but it doesn't seem like my calculations are correct. Looking forward to any tutorial :)

·
·
·
·
·

Oh dang, sorry I missed your question before.
To be honest my formula doesn't seem right either, idk why, is it the vesting difference?
I can get a close estimate, but idk why I'm off.
User-Vests/Reward Vests * VP * 2 still makes some sense, but yes I agree that I'm missing something :/
@Stoner, any idea?

·

Not a problem buddy. I just remembered your formula because I got some smoke rewards and wanted to know what my new voting payout would be. I will try and take a crack at the formula and see if I can get close to a value that makes sense for my current voting power. Fingers crossed :)

Btw how much is your vote at 100%
I just noticed now from upvoting your comment that my vote is worth 0.03 at 100%

·
·
·
·

Thanks for the formula @trees. This should definitely help so many newbies like myself to understand how much our votes are worth.

= (vesting shares/pending reward vests)x2xVP%
= (16.276780/7465.403107)x2x16.330
= 0.0712084300312653

If my calculations are correct than based off the answer above my vote value increased from 0.001 to 0.07 VESTS. Would love to know if this is correct. Regards,

Those curation payouts are nice bonus when you look at your wallet and retrieve the rewards!

I did do some self-upvoting a long time ago when I was a newbie on steemit in the summer of 2017; but only because I was so new to the blogging blockchain and had NO CLUE what I was really doing.

Everyone has his or her own opinion of self-voting; and sometimes (as we all know from steemit) it can cause great disruptions, drama and flag wars. I am not against or advocating for self-upvoting because I see it as... it's your account, do with it what you will.

·

I'm not really trying to be a hater on self-voters, it's just that the potential to earn even more is there.
I could even see some justifications for self-voting, especially on steem if you're trying to get seen past a hundred "Nice Post!" comments, just praying to get past the dust threshold, etc.
I feel like I've spotted a couple people here doing the comment then self-vote dance though and if anything I just feel rather sad for them since their experience of the site may not be as good as mine. But yeah, oh well, as you say it's their account, and it wasn't bad enough for me to want to flag them, so ce la vie.

Hello @trees
I'm new in smoke-network
I have also bought like 46 smoke and made it sp straightway
I'm now researching for to know what is smoke.io all about and i'm focusing on how to make quality content to curated by powerful accounts. But my voting value is 0.010
can I be a curator too? How much can I earn buy curating posts a day?
Hope you will answer my question :D
Thank you

·

I'm terrible at math. If someone who has read how this all works could sit down and give us an equation of maximum curation based on SP then that would be nice.

I just checked a random 50SP person and they have around 0.550 smoke curation for the week. You could probably beat this if you built some kind of a strategy. In fact percentage wise I believe that beats my score.

So yes, it's possible with a 50 SP account to curate some % of your weight.

How much you end up earning depends on how other people vote, so could end up with 0 or you could end up with more than you voted for. Timing is everything as well, especially when you're smaller. As far as I know, we gotta get in there fast to earn much of anything. If this works the same as steemit, and if I recall correctly, then 1-5 minutes after being posted, a vote mostly goes to the author, then voting after the 5-minute mark can start making some curation. With a higher % as you approach the 30-minute mark, risking the chance of someone stealing if they get there first.

Note: I did not read the smoke whitepaper so I could be typing insanity.
Edit: In fact, as an American it's my duty to not read things.

Thank you buy the way

This is awesome to see curating is that great. I am one that see no point i self vote comments

Thanks for this reminder and I agree curation rewards are just awesome on Smoke.io compared to others like Steem. I feel that rewarding curators more helps to prevent self-voting and other vote abuses. Good read!!!

·

One abuse that I'm sort of worried about, is if someone can become such a whale that they suck up the 10% that gets dispersed to the general crowd of smokers and somehow abuse that.
Important Note: I don't know if this is possible in the slightest, I was just stoned and thinking. I'm not even sure how that system works. Life is a wonderful mystery to me.

I had not thought about this. Interesting to know! I try to vote for others often and never my self

I have been saying it on steem for a while: the price would go up if curation rewards were increased.

Let this be a case study to Steemit and great point in showing that it is almost a moot point to self-upvote here!

self voting actually down the decentralized system.

Thanks for the good info, but also for pointing me to other quality posters! Look forward to more!
