A lot of us like a good toke, a bong or a spliff... whichever method you prefer. But given how enjoyable a nice hit can be, there’s no exclusivity to marijuana and celebrities also liked their toke.
Of course, we all know that people like Hunter S. Thompson loved their marijuana - and other substances too. And no list of substance use would be complete without Charlie Sheen, in fact it would probably be rather challenging to find a substance Sheen didn’t like. And because he loves his substances that much, we will not include him in this list. It just would be too easy.
Through the years, there have been many more celebrities who smoked marijuana. No, no... we’re not talking Elon Musk. So let’s have a look at some famous pot smokers.
People use the words “legend” and “legendary” too easily. But if you’re talking about Bill Murray, there’s not many other words which come close to describing the actor.
Groundhog Day, The Caddyshack, Saturday Night Live, and of course there’s his position on legal marijuana.

Which may or may not be influenced by a previous arrest with 10 pounds of marijuana on him. Told you... legend.
More so, when he got caught it was because he joked having two bombs in his suitcase. Not sure if he was talking to a TSA agent while at the airport, but the U.S. Marshals didn’t see the joke when called. Definitely not when they found the cannabis. U.S. Marshals, lacking humor since 1970.
Luckily it was his first offense and Murray escaped jail, instead he was placed on probation for five years. It did result in dropping out of his medical college degree though and would eventually lead to him moving to New-York and become an actor.
Some years ago Murray held a AMA on Reddit (Ask Me Anything) and was asked about he his position on marijuana.
“People are realizing that the war on drugs is a failure, that the amount of money spent, you could have bought all the drugs with that much money rather than create this army of people and incarcerated people. I think the terror of marijuana was probably overstated. I don’t think people are really concerned about it the way they once were. Now that we have crack and crystal and whatnot, people don’t even think about marijuana anymore, it’s like someone watching too many videogames in comparison.”
“The fact that states are passing laws allowing it means that its threat has been over-exagerated. Psychologists recommend smoking marijuana rather than drinking if you are in a stressful situation. These are ancient remedies, alcohol and smoking, and they only started passing laws against them 100 years ago.”
Murray would later often refer to cannabis in his work, especially starting in Caddyshack.
And let’s not forget the epic story of Bill Murray banging on Chevy Chase’s door at 3AM to score some weed.
With that voice and air, the man must be born with sativa in his body. Now I know there’s some smartasses here in the cannabis community, but before you go all pedantic on me, hear me out.
Yes, just like you well-read tokers, I know that Morgan Freeman didn’t recently come out in favor of a good joint. But while coming to the forefront and possibly becoming one of the more prominent and important ambassadors to the cause, he did also say he has been consuming cannabis since the 70s.
I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana.
But it’s true, in recent times, Freeman’s advocacy has been mostly about the benefits of MMJ and also CBD after a car crash in 2008. Following the accident he needed multiple surgeries to his shoulder and arm and has been living with pain ever since.
Come to the rescue our beloved greens.
And how does Morgan Freeman consume his marijuana?
“My first wife got me into it many years ago. How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it!”
—Morgan Freeman to the Daily Beast
And, of course, he once famously told The Guardian that he would “Never give up the Ganja”, which he calls God’s own weed.
So maybe, when you remember him being a staunch advocate pro-MMJ, you didn’t really pay attention but remember... never argue with
Lucious Morgan Freeman.
Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher is a famous proponent of legalized marijuana.
Last year he even called out the Democrats to embrace legalization during the mid-terms (see video embedded below). Maher regularly puts the question to his talk show guests, Real Time with Bill Maher, on HBO.
If you’ve been a lead character in Fight Club, you’ve probably tried one or the other thing during the recording of the movie.
If you’ve starred in
Tarantino’s Tony Scott’s True Romance and were always stoned in it chances are that you’ve toked more than one joint in real life too.
Hunk to many, but not Angelina anymore, Brad Pitt is not a stranger to the pleasures of a good toke and admitted to THR that towards the end of last century he smoked way too much pot.
“I was hiding out from the celebrity thing; I was smoking way too much dope; I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut; and I really got irritated with myself.”
While Pitt said that later, being a dad, he ditched pot, rumors came out after his breakup with Angelina Jolie that his pot his and excessive drinking had become too much for the femme fatale. What with living in California, right?
If you have scored the most points in history of NBA you need nothing more to be called a legend. Especially not if you are the GOAT.
Sorry, Michael Jordan fans. Sorry Lebron fans.
This is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar we’re talking about.
Also the man who regularly tested positively for marijuana.
“I don’t really care who’s doing drugs in the NBA as long as the scene isn’t adversely affecting my team and teammates. I’ve known enough drug users–going as far back as grade school and the streets of New York–not to view them as pariahs or lost souls. I’ve certainly smoked more than my quota of weed.”
Nowadays though, he uses it to combat migraine.
Legendary Tommy Chong even claimed that Kareem Abdul-Jabber stayed as long in NBA because he smoked pot.
And if half of Cheech & Chong says it is so... then it is so.
Michelle and Barack Obama
Listen, it’s OK to like or not like Barack Obama. Whichever side you swing to we are fine with. This is not a political forum and your nor our political opinion matters.
But what’s important here is that Obama gets it. Obama got all it was about.
Unlike Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton didn’t get it at all.
“When I was a kid I inhaled frequently. That was the point.”
“When I was in England, I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn’t like it. I didn’t inhale and never tried it again.”
— Bill Clinton
We don’t know how Michelle feels about his smoking nowadays, but she admitted to smoking in her youth too. In her recently published memoir Becoming she mentioned that with a high school friend she “fooled around and smoked in his car”.
Being Michelle, of course, she also referred to Barack, to a “looser, more wild” Barack in his teens and she wrote he “smoked pot in the lush volcanic foothills of Oahu”.
Considering that marijuana is healthy, we can but think that Michelle follows Stewie Griffin’s line of thinking nowadays.
