For today's weed news we go to the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Wada or the World Anti-Doping Agency is basically the sports world's steroid police. Every year they update their list of prohibited substances that athletes may not have present in their system at any time, and they did it again earlier this week.
A substance qualifies to be on WADA's Prohibited List if it meets any combination of at least two of the following three conditions:
Having the potential to enhance performance.
Being potentially harmful to an athlete's health.
Violating "the spirit of sport," as they put it.
And guess what... The 2020 version of WADA's Prohibited List made sure to include "all natural and synthetic cannabinoids."
That means that everyone from olympians to all other international athletes who's sports fall under WADA's jurisdiction can face very serious consequences if they come up positive for weed. (The United States has their own version of such an agency called USADA and Australia has their own agency known as ASADA, but as far as cannabis goes, they both adhere to the same rules as WADA does, they all took cannabidiol off the banned substances list back in 2018) And we all know that Cannabis metabolites can potentially stay in one system for up to a whole month.
However, the Agency did make one, very wise exception... cannabidiol!
Because CBD is non-psychoactive and as far as science knows, does not harm humans who consume it, it literally does not meet the criteria described above to be included on the Prohibited List.
In recent years, hundreds of athletes have come out in support of allowing CBD in sports because of its anti-inflammatory characteristics, with many of them saying that they've gone as far as completely replacing some of their NSAIDs thay used to take with it!
And the fact that as of last year, the World Anti-Doping Agency started making a distinction between cannabidiol and all other cannabinoids makes me feel like they are actually paying attention.
I really hope that the next few years bring with them more scientific studies pertaining to cannabis and its effect on sports as well as its effects on athlete's health.
To me it seems like the more we find out about it, the more we realize that weed is more like a vitamin and less like a drug. And to be honest, it gives me hope that an Agency like WADA would take the time to understand cannabis enough to differentiate between various cannabinoids in order to make sure that athletes aren't being punished for simply trying to heal their bodies in the most effective and safest way available.
I can't help but wonder how they plan to treat all the other beneficial cannabinoids like CBG, CBN and others that, as the commercialization of cannabis continuous worldwide, are beginning to be isolated and offered to consumers. I guess new substances and chemical formulas are created all the time and maybe that's the reason why the agency updates the list on an annual basis.
Bottom line, it's a really good thing that athletes are being allowed to use cannabidiol.
But anyway, for now, that's what's up with cannabidiol and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
