For today's weed news we go to the great state of Nevada.
2020 presidential hopeful Joseph Biden recently spoke at a town hall in Las Vegas about his stance on federally legalizing Weed should he become president, and it might not be what you expect from a Democratic candidate.
"The truth of the matter is, there's not nearly been enough evidence that has been acquired as to whether or not it is a gateway drug... It's a debate, and I want a lot more before I legalize it nationally. I want to make sure we know a lot more about the science behind it," said Biden.
Throughout his campaign, Biden has been supportive of legalizing medical cannabis and has even been quoted saying that he feels criminalizing simple cannabis possession "should not be a crime". He has also signaled that although he wouldn't flat-out legalize cannabis, he would want to reschedule it from a schedule 1, to a schedule 2 substance, in order to make it much easier for scientists to study.
"It is not irrational to do more scientific investigation to determine, which we have not done significantly enough, whether or not there are any things that relate to whether it's a gateway drug or not," Joe Biden continued.
I guess that does make sense in theory. But I personally think that there is a lot of evidence for the opposite, meaning that Cannabis is more of an exit drug. I think the only reason it may have been viewed as a gateway drug is because it's lumped in with all the "real drugs". Because if you're talking about a substance that gets people into being intoxicated, then you have to call alcohol the biggest gateway drug. But nobody seems to be trying to take alcohol off the shelves anymore, are they?
When asked about what he thought of states' rights to make their own decisions about the plant, Biden said that he fully supports individual states making their own rules when it comes to trees.
So, basically, I feel like Biden is trying to create a narrative that sets him apart from the sea of other Democratic presidential hopefuls who are all eagerly chasing the Cannabis-user vote, promising to do whatever they can to legalize weed as soon as they're elected.
I also feel like him being an older guy, he probably doesn't have any real experience with Cannabis himself, so he's just running on information that he might have read somewhere or that one of his colleagues or assistants brought to his attention.
Although I certainly disagree with Joe Biden about cannabis being a gateway drug, I can kind of see why he would want to be overly cautious and not just legalize weed willy-nilly.
I do however feel like next year's election is going to have a major impact on the legalization movement, and we Cannabis users must keep that in mind.
Thankfully, Biden isn't totally against weed, just overly cautious, and you can't blame a guy who doesn't blaze for wanting to see some scientific evidence that legalizing the plant won't turn all of America's children into drug addicts.
But on the cool, I think his position is going to cost him the fucking presidential election next year, but that's just my speculation. But I guess that remains to be seen.
And that's what's up with Joe Biden and legalizing Weed if he becomes president.
