For today's weed news we go to the great state of Illinois.
As you may have heard, recreational Cannabis is officially becoming legal in Illinois on January 1st 2020. And to help people understand what is and is not going to be allowed moving forward, the Chicago Police Department just posted a video on their Facebook page explaining the new laws.
Basically, the video features officers of the law talking about how people over 21 will soon be allowed to buy and have just over one ounce, or exactly 30 grams of flower, up to 5 grams of concentrates like wax and hash as well as edibles and other so-called "infused products" that contain no more then 500 mg of THC.
Officers go on to explain that growing weed is still going to be illegal for regular citizens. The only exception being registered medical Cannabis patients. The only place people will legally be able to buy cannabis is going to be at state-licensed dispensaries. The cops also made sure to to remind everybody that private sales of Cannabis between people will also remain illegal.
That last part is something that I find kind of strange. If you're going to make Weed legal and I can go get an ounce at the store, why can't I sell half that ounce to my roommate who doesn't have time to go to the store himself?
To wrap it up, the officers also cautioned people about getting faded or being faded in public. Apparently, consuming your legal Trees will only be allowed in people's private homes. One caveat being that landlords and property owners will still retain the right to ban tenants from using Weed on their properties if they feel like it.
But one thing that really surprised me is that this state is actually planning on allowing some Cannabis businesses to have so-called "on-site consumption spaces" where people will be able to enjoy their legal Cannabis in a more social setting with other like-minded individuals.
"As we move into the new year, we ask all adults who choose to legally purchase Cannabis products to do so in a safe and responsible manner in order to ensure the public safety of all Chicago residents," says one Chicago's Finest in the conclusion of the film.
Overall I got to say that I personally feel Illinois is starting off their recreational Cannabis situation on the right foot. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of kinks to iron out and I'm sure not everybody is going to be happy with the rules initially, but I am thrilled to see yet another Midwestern state turn recreational! I was in Chicago about two years ago for a minute and would have loved to have the opportunity to legally buy Trees there. But I guess I just need to go back in 2020.
Anyway, things are looking pretty good in Illinois and it's all because of the countless action-takers that do more than just talk about Cannabis law reform. Shoutouts to all of y'all and a Happy New Year.
And for now that's what's up in the great state of Illinois!
