ChronoCannabis News: 12-15-18
Every week I will bring you the latest news for that week.
Cedar Rapids in Iowa is now home to the state’s second marijuana processing plant. The site of the Iowa Relief Cannabis Cultivation and Processing Facility held a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the plant’s construction. The state board that awarded the cultivation and processing plant requires the plant to be built by July 1st, 2019. At first, the plant will only only have 10 workers in a warehouse-like facility. Iowa Relief is a subsidiary of Acreage Holdings, which runs manufacturing facilities around the country; the parent company is believed to have solutions that will speed construction along.
In Massachusetts, the Cannabis Control Commission approved four new recreational retail “pot shops.” Each shop is in a different city: Great Barrington, Pittsfield, Fall River, and Hudson. The first two legal pot shops opened in November. Dispensaries are expected to open in and around Boston over the next few months, and particularly so as 2019 goes on. Recreational marijuana was legalized in 2016, but state legislators and regulators have taken nearly two years to approach a state where dispensaries could open.
In a similar vein, an entrepreneur from Massachusetts has brought a sort of cannabis “gifting” to Michigan. The state has legalized marijuana but has yet to create a legal market for the product. Said legal market is not expected to be available till 2020. Detroit-based shoppers can visit the High Road website to buy snacks or a t-shirt, and once the purchase goes through, the service will provide a legal quantity of cannabis alongside the original purchase as a gift. Regulators hold that the service circumvents licensing laws, but it is unknown what legal repercussions may occur at this time.
A gas station-marijuana dispensary hybrid has opened on Portland, Maine. Atlantic Farms Gas n’ Grass is considered to be the first business of its kind in the state, and the dispensary sells gummies, tinctures, and flower. The business received its occupancy and approval from state regulators just before a moratorium on further cannabis businesses was passed in October. Only eight other businesses were able to get permits between updates to state regulations and the moratorium. The dispensary’s staff has been sure to tell drivers they cannot consume cannabis and drive. The unique business model has caused the dispensary to be considered on the forefront of cannabis entrepreneurship.
This weekend, the 15th annual Emerald Cup event is beginning in California on the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. This event will be California’s first event where all adults can smoke and purchase cannabis instead of state-authorized medical patients. The Emerald Cup is considered to be the most respected sun-grown cannabis competition, and many come to northern California to partake in the goods, culture, and community. There is an extensive music lineup for the event, including more than 14 artists slated to perform. On top of those stars are the speakers, with a list full of elite growers, extractors, and researchers. Naturally, there is a great selection of vendors as well that attendees are welcome to speak to about their products. The event promises to be a strong one.
