Turkish President Erdogan Wants Turkey to Enter Cannabis Industry

last month

The cannabis sector is heating up, especially in the Middle East. After continued progress and news coming out of Israel, this time our attention goes to Turkey where authoritarian President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he wants Turkey to join the party.

Never one to play popular opinion, Erdogan did of course spice up the news in ways only populists tend to do.

At two different times this year, Erdogan expressed that Turkey should join the growing sector and steps will be undertaken. First mention was during a meeting at the presidential palace in Ankara, where he explicitly stated “We will produce it again”.

Few days later Erdogan again spoke out in support of expanding the agricultural sector by also producing industrial hemp.

“I am calling out to my nation; let’s start the process to cultivate industrial hemp. We will see that industrial hemp has many different benefits in many different areas”
— Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Turkey

Yet it isn’t clear whether he meant hemp or cannabis, as he used the term “kenevir” at both events. Kenevir which can mean both, but the Turkish official news agency TRT did use the word “cannabis” in its write up.

Spicing up the announcement, Erdogan appealed to anti-Western sentiments and blamed the Western Imperialism for having destroyed the cannabis sector in Turkey.

“ We destroyed cannabis in this country because of some enemies who were disguised as friends”
— Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Turkey

Currently hemp cultivation is allowed in 19 of 81 Turkish provinces. Following Erdogan’s announcement, the Turkish Agriculture Minister Bekir Pakdemirli announced that. More licenses will be issued in order to expand the sector. He also mentioned that the Black Sea Agricultural Institute and the Ondokuz Mayis University are working at a joint research project n commercial cannabis.

“We will approve new locations that will produce organic cannabis”
— Bekir Pakdemirli, Minister of Agriculture for Turkey to Middle East Eye

The news was quickly followed up by a full spread front-page calling “Cannabis is a national matter” by pro-government newspaper Dirilis Postasi.
