Behind The Scenes With Authority Magazine Interview With Stoner

last month

I was asked to participate in an Authority Magazine & Thrive Global series entitled "Big Ideas That Can Change The World".

My pitch was simple and perhaps I reused some of Brendan Blumer's pitch entitled Decentralized Funding and the New Corporate Structure. But it worked, and I got the call. (Sorry Brendan but I know you reuse others stuff all the time... Cough, who coined Exponential Operating System again?

Here was my initial pitch which was included in the interview...

Imagine a company that issues a native digital token and distributes that currency to its value creators according to a preset set of rules. Let’s take the Facebook model as an example whereby a decentralized version of Facebook would issue tokens to those providing and curating content autonomously and then those content creators and curators sold them back to advertisers. The economic loop is closed and everyone holding the token has a new incentive to increase the value of the token by providing and curating better content and increasing the user base. Everyone is now invested in the success of the business.

Notice how my pitch doesn't mention Cannabis or Smoke.io?

Telling A Story Of The Future, Mixed In With The Past.

In a world of content marketing, people are fickle. Pitching your product in a traditional manner is just not hip anymore (Has it ever been?). Since the start of the internet bubble investors and users alike gravitate towards the story more than the product.

By setting the stage for a future built around the technology the story comes alive and by setting the stage for the past the story gains context.

So to start the interview I was asked, Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

It has been a long journey for me in the cannabis niche that brought me to Smoke.io. One fateful day my cannabis dealer showed me the now-defunct website, Silk Road on the Darknet. Instantly I was intrigued by the idea that an anonymous currency coupled with online encryption could have such an impact and create a truly free market (So I thought). I spent the next weeks studying everything I could about Bitcoin and the Darknet and scoured forum after forum soaking up the new found knowledge that would truly change my life’s purpose.

After reading some of Ross Ulbrights (only known as Dread Pirate Roberts, leader of the Silk Road market, at the time) manifesto’s which were deeply inspired by the Austrian School of Economics, something in me clicked. A sense I could achieve more and truly add to a change in society’s reliance on centralized systems.

In the early days of crypto, the community was heavily influenced by the Austrian School of Economics... Even Dan Larimer's early work is inspired by it as can be seen in the sidebar on his personal blog.

It is this school of thought that shaped our future at the time. Coins with "pre-mines" such as DASH (called darkcoin at the time) where extremely shunned by the close-knit community that seems to have fragmented itself since the dawn of blockchains such as Ethereum and the rise of social media platforms such as Discord and Telegram. Are there any BTC maximalists left?

I still believe and hold values true that I learned over this period of my life. Though I was, for the most part, a ghost in the 2013 - 2016 scene I will always value the conversations on Bitcointalk and darknet forums with likeminded individuals and later with crypto-anarchists which helped shape my ideas for the Smoke Blockchain and what we can achieve here.

By providing the backstory the next answer makes more sense and allows the reader to grasp their is a real movement behind this idea and that the companies and platforms they dearly hold in their portfolios may become disrupted.

Having almost instant access to become part of a decentralized company by simply buying tokens or providing the service, the job landscape would definitely change once more companies adopted this model. Anyone with the skills or assets to provide the service the company provides will be able to work for it in exchange for tokens.

These decentralized organizations have the potential to grow, unlike anything we have ever seen before them and could potentially dominate each and every sector of our lives. Without shareholders milking the cow, they will provide fair value services and products that will be hard to beat in a free market.

Create Intrigue Into The Technology

An interesting question then came up: Keeping “Black Mirror” and the “Law of Unintended Consequences” in mind, can you see any potential drawbacks about this idea that people should think more deeply about?

It was with this question I knew I would be able to hold the reader more accountable for the future:

Due to the nature of decentralized applications, organizations are set up so that breaking the law will most certainly appear and may be hard or even impossible to shut down.

Something that comes to mind is a decentralized assassination market. Issuing tokens to “hitmen” that then sell the tokens back to ‘bidders’ could be a very dangerous precedent to set and is quite possible to set up under the decentralized organization model.

Since the early Darknet, the idea of an assassination market has come up frequently amongst crypto communities. Something of a dark horse it definitely congers up images and dangers of a completely free society but there is something powerful in the idea that cryptocurrency has the power to incentivize even the most fundamentally evil ethical behaviors and perhaps.. just for a moment, the reader finds themselves immersed in the true possibilities crypto can unlock.. (Not assassination markets per say, but the ability to create censorship resistant societies that may go against their reality or the reality that's been built by their governments control.)

The Change Is Already Happening

To tie into Social Networking I respond to the following two questions:

Was there a “tipping point” that led you to this idea? Can you tell us that story?

As we’ve said before, being part of a global cannabis community and owning a large network of social media assets in 2016, our network suffered greatly at the hands of Facebook as they began censoring cannabis communities.

YouTube followed suit and thousands of hours of our content was removed from both platforms. This was definitely a big tipping point and was a huge inspiration for what Smoke.io and Smoke Network are today.

Over time, solutions in the cryptocurrency space developed far enough along that a decentralized model became possible that would allow cannabis brands, content creators and advertisers a system that could align their interests while remaining censorship resistant.

If it weren’t for Facebook and their complete disregard for cannabis businesses and users across the globe as well as their self-serving and greedy manipulation of their users on a daily basis, Smoke Network would never have been born.

What do you need to lead this idea to widespread adoption?

Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are already partly doing my job for me as each day we have “Instagram Refugees” that have had their content removed and instantly lose their income join us.

By clearly showcasing our use case and outlying the flaw in current social media platforms we can clearly articulate how this future is already manifesting itself. Blockchains such as Steem have clearly demonstrated the possibilities and even Zuckerberg has recently been toying with the idea of blockchain authorization for logins.

Large corporations have a shelf life. Just ask Jeff Bezos how long Amazons got left before it goes belly up... Recently Jeff is quoted as saying:

One day, Amazon will fail

I would argue autonomous decentralized companies will surpass the network effect as each and every user is invested in the success of the platform or product.

You look more like a rockstar in these pics. And Thanks to Facebook and Youtube for making us have our own platform. I never knew that they were so against us. Anyway we'll remember that. I don't know about youtube, but Facebook is losing alot of its clients lately and i think the main reason is their stupidity.

·

Facebook hates a lot of things now and contributing to the end of free speech: https://www.rt.com/news/451773-facebook-block-maffick-media-censorship/

TheWeedTube also started cos cannabis YouTubers where being banned.

Love it ! You've help push this amazing project into the world and it feels like your vision is taking shape. The growth of this platform has been impressive. I've stated many times in my post my love for this blockchain project. I feel you are the perfect person to start this monster. Beyond all that BS, love the pics, paper airplane shirt and amped to read the interview. =)

·

Thanks bro! <3

Awesome interview, great title "Big Ideas That Might Change The World" and high quailty pics.

Yes Smoke.io with your efforts and hard work will change the world.
Thank you.

·

Thanks for the support buddy. Together we will change the world.

Great interview.

And those pictures are gonna make every Portland hipster jealous.

·

Thanks.

hahaha!

Great article @stoner! It feels like any moment this is going to spill into the mass adoption area! Exciting times we live in!

·

Thank's bud. . . We have a few PR stunts planned for this year to try kick it off and still dancing the Google dance with our SERPs but sure enough once network effect kicks in.

I like the pic in the Cape Town CBD.
Who is the photgrapher?

·

Keagan Petersen (https://www.instagram.com/funlifecapetown/)

Updating the post now to include the references thanks for the reminder.

Nice hat.

·

Thanks. That one is fucked now from the smoke grenade, but I got a few of em :')

·
·

Fuck'em up while you still can 😂. Where did you get that smoke grenade though?

·
·
·

It's an Enola Gaye pull wire grenade.. Scored it from the local airsoft supplier.

Ah the darknet - was good to hear some of your back story, great approach to the interview, excellent photos! - now i want a beer :)

·

A beer 🍻? Lol 😂 😂 I thought I was the only one who saw that. I want too. 😂

·
·

Do they sell Conyagi your side? That's one drink I truly miss here in South Africa.

·
·
·

Conyagi? I have not even heard of it before. Lol

·

Did you have a beer? You got such dank bud that side I'm not sure you need it. :D

·

I remeber my endeavors on the darknet. Going on Onion as a teen and visiting those shady sites. I felt like a hacker.

Wow boss you really are the one and true. If it were not for you all of this would not exist. With you giving birth to this project you give a lot of us a kind of home to go to where we are not banned, deleted or shunned for our love and support for world wide cannabis legalization. I know that one day Smoke will be the biggest thing in the cannabis world which will push the world to a better place and revolutionize the cannabis laws worldwide and bring together growers, sellers, reviewers, enthusiasts, lovers, patients and all kind of different cannabis oriented people, businesses and the J market in general. I can see what you mean that all those mainstream platforms are pushing the growth of Smoke with their actions of rejecting cannabis content. I personally can not thank you enough for creating this platform. I have been able to meet such wonderful people from all sides of our little blue planet. You have given many people hope for a better future and we will all support you and I belive we all will be eternity grestful for showing us that we are not alone. I love the pictures and I'll check out that photographer friend of yours. He does stunning photos.

·

Thanks for the great words and encouragement bud.

·
·

You od all people deserve those words the most. You brought together this family and we help it to keep growing.

I hope you are correct in your visions for the future of smoke.io. With more and more intrusions into our lives by the overbearing sociopaths we call leaders it getting harder by the day to maintain some freedom. With the rise of all the decentralized platforms like smoke.io we have a chance of fighting back against TPTB, for this I thank you my friend, bong on bro. :-)

·

Thank you bro! Web3.0 baby yeah!!!

Classic reply

Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are already partly doing my job for me as each day we have “Instagram Refugees” that have had their content removed and instantly lose their income join us.

Am impressed with the interview and i strongly believe that soon, the world will have no choice than to embrace blockchain tech between, those pictures are charming.

·

:D I try... We busy coding up a neat little update to come out soon too.

Congratulations!
Great interview and amazing pics, love the colors.

·

Thanks Robot! How many colors can you detect? :')

·
·

All of them! :D

Pd: I also do color correction for video and photo as one of my jobs as a freelancer, learned in the cinema school and man, the color work done with the pics was pretty cool, and also I love this color palette used :)

·

Thanks so much li-art. :D . I need to work out getting a little belly now :(

·
·

You rock, @stoner! Amazing pictures, beautiful attitude and such a smart technique to promote this blockchain. Saving the world with one hand whilst rolling a spliff with the other one. I am happy to be a part of it.

·

Thanks mayb. :D I'm happy you a part of it too! Let's make this the best cannabis community in the world!

·
·

… from one burning heart

A very good insight at how the Smoke Network came into being and I am glad to be part of its platform. I ´ve seen the Silk Road documentary and how Ross Ulbricht made an empire until he commited one mistake. I hope he could still be paroled.

Your efforts for this network have already been shaped and is taking mass adoption, we will soon reach the top.... and that´s for sure!!! Cheers!

·

Glad you enjoyed the insights. I am happy you an early part of the journey with us.

Ross is tweeting from prison now if you want to follow him: https://twitter.com/RealRossU

·
·

Yeah, I´ve been following him and read about his tweets. I really hope that he will be successful with his clemency. Keeping my fingers crossed!

that was a good read man ... great you are spreading the word not only of Smoke.io but to the bigger picture in general. Zuckerberg sure has a lot to answer for!
Cool pics ...

·

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

Word! Dope interview... great leader... great project! As always I’m excited for what’s to come!

·

Thanks, heaterville! We working on an update at the moment that should be pretty cool.

Such a great read... So glad I can get to know you thru Smoke.io 😎

·

Awesome! I look forward to getting to know you too once you start posting. :)

Wow very great job

·

Thanks Rockzu!

Nice tattoos boss. Anytime I look at your pics that's what I always want to see. 😅. Beautiful <3.

·

Thanks buddy! I want to get the other arm done, but it is expensive.

·
·

It's beautiful, so I can't agree less to the word expensive you used. When smoke token hit the moon, I might do my own too. 😊

This is awesome!

·

Thanks!

I bet the girls love that smoke trick ;)
