Cannabis Hemp Golden Age

Cannabis Historians are familiar with America's World War II era slogan /Hemp For Victory/ which encouraged farmers to help the war effort by sowing crops of Hemp - Marijuana's non-psychoactive cousin.

King Henry VIII (1491-1547)

But back to Henry VIII's time, we will see that campaign was actually a throwback to the reign
of England, 486 years ago today.

At the time, England was a Black Sheep amid European countries due to the Reformation - England's split from the Catholic Church.

To prevent another European country from forcing England back into the fold, Henry VIII mustered one of the world's first Professional Navies and:

  • Mandated Hemp Cultivation in 1533 and decreed that all landholders set aside one-quarter acre for the cultivation of hemp for every sixty acres of land that they tilled, in order to provide the necessary fibre required by the nation. This was to satisfy the increased command for rope and sailcloth for King Henry’s VIII New Navy.

  • Made Hemp Growing The Law Of The Land. For every 60 acres, agriculturalists had to set aside one rood (about 1/4 acre) for flax or Hemp. Otherwise, they'd face a fine of three shillings and four pence - about half a year's wage for a household servant - For Breaking The Law.

The English Once Had To Grow Hemp, Or Be Punished For Not Doing So !

Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603)

  • Thirty Years Later, the threat of invasion slowly became a reality under the reign of Henry's daughter Elizabeth I, who faced War With Spain - the global superpower of the 16th century. So the Virgin Queen reintroduced the law, ordered farmers to Grow Even More Hemp to expand her navy and she added a £5 fine for any eligible landlord who failed to comply.

  • Henry & Elizabeth improved the supply of this Strategic Raw Material. From then the Hemp Industry became very important to the England’s Economy.

  • By the 1600s, the need to raise the supply of this strategic raw commodity (Cannabis Hemp) sped up the European Exploration and colonization of the Americas.

I learnt about Henry VIII in highschool but there were no words about hemp in my history book.

thanks again for this beautiful post

I like to search to discover what they hide / As no one can hide the history!
And I feel well when I see my work in google, as I believe this will help to build the SEO!

Beautiful, in few months it will appear on first pages!

This should not come as a surprise as they were imperialists. I think they had some other pretty good stuff as well from around the world.

Indeed, no surprise here, for me The Nice Surprise Was: Club Des Hashischins 1844-1849! As I was really impressed by Moreau's description of Cannabis as "An Intellectual Intoxication", preferable to the "Ignoble Heavy Drunkenness" of alcohol.
