Before Prohibition, when #Cannabis plants grew freely, many of Notable People throughout #History, came together to enjoy What God Gave Us, and created necessary contributions to the event of common Cannabis Usage, whether they promoted growing weed, took a number of puffs, or used the Medical #Marijuana throughout the ages, from ancient civilizations, to queens, to presidents, to emperors.

If you enjoyed reading about the Famed Egyptian Ruler / Ramesses The Great, The Sonnet 76 / William Shakespeare, The Fifth President of the United States / James Monroe, how the Tincture of Cannabis helped / Queen Victoria out of her difficulties, the Extraordinary Cache of unearthed well preserved Cannabis plants / Marijuana Inside The Tomb, the Chinese Surgeon / Hua Tuo, and about the Father of Modern Marijuana Medicine / William Brooke O'Shaughnessy, then it is the time to read about the Cannabis Use In Ancient Greeks !

  • Ancient Greece Civilization provided the foundation for Western Civilization. It lasted from 750 BC to A.D. 600, during which time the Greeks invented democracy, developed philosophy, and wrote plays and poems that are still studied and performed today.

  • In addition to the above innovations, Ancient Greeks also came up with some New Uses For Marijuana as Various Greek Writers talked about using cannabis to get rid of tapeworms, stop nosebleeds and reduce ear inflammation. Unfortunately, their next idea was to give teenage boys hemp seeds in order to "Dry Up Semen," so the boys could make it through the night without unwanted ejaculations, hopefully those patients at least had a few pleasant side effects.

  • Ancient Greeks could are influenced by Indian Use of Medical Cannabis, but Ancient recreational use of Cannabis appears to have been limited, although some sources describe the seeds being often used as an intoxicant.

  • The First Written Record comes from Herodotus, who stated that Scythians, a group of ancient Iranian nomads, took vapor baths using marijuana, and the Ancient Greeks were open to using Cannabis, unlike most of the world today. And they got rid of tapeworm with Marijuana, too.

  • Although having nothing to do with Medical Cannabis, we can see that the Museum deals mostly with Cannabis Antiques having brand or trade names.

Herodotus

Many of you, may read the oft-cited passages from Herodotus, written between 450 and 420 BCE, in which he documents Cannabis Use among the nomadic Scythian tribes that habitually traversed Northern Greece.

If we take a look at this full quotation, these are the facts the way this Museum sees them:

The Hemp Plant in question, given its size and description as a source of clothing, seems to have been an industrial grade (what we would now term Industrial Hemp) plant and thus would have has little Medicinal or recreational uses.
That the incense vapors were used as part of a religious ceremony for the dead, similarly to the use of the use of myrrh and frankincense by the Roman Catholic Church today.

Democritus

In around 460 BCE, the thinker Democritus wrote about a concoction referred to as Potamaugis, that was a mix of wine, cannabis and myrrh that cause hallucinatory, visionary states.

Dioscorides

In 70 AD, the Physician Pedacius Dioscorides recorded cannabis in his pharmacopoeia. It is thought that Cannabis Was Extensively Employed in Greek drugs and Cannabis Leaf was normally prescribed as a cure for nosebleeds, and therefore the seeds were accustomed treat tapeworms, ache and inflammation.

Dioscorides wrote in Book III of the Materia Medica:

"Kannabis; is a plant of much use in this life for the twisting of very strong ropes, it has leaves like to the Ash, of a bad scent, long stalks, empty, a round seed, which being eaten of reduces sexual activity, but being juiced when it is green is good for the pains of the ears."

In 200 BCE Hemp Rope Has Been Discovered in Tombs in Northern Greece, and it is believed that textiles for garment-making were also produced. Cannabis Fibre was widely used in the manufacture of rope, sailcloth, and other textiles, cannabis was specifically used to make nautical Reefing Ropes known in ancient Greek as kaloi.

The Ancient Greeks used cannabis not only for human medicine, but also in veterinary medicine to dress wounds and sores on their horses.

I'd like to try me some Potamaugis.

This is awesome. For the past few weeks or more Dr Drew has been doing a weekly podcast on the history of Opium https://weeklyinfusion.libsyn.com/ , you should get with him and do a weed version.

THAT HERODOTUS .... THE FATHER OF HISTORY... AND THEY DIDNT TEACH US ANYTHING BEYOND THAT. IM SO CONGESTED AND SICK, CHEST IS ON FIRE... I WISH I HAD A MARIJUANA VAPOR BATH.... i FIND IT INTERESTING THAT THEY SAID, THERE WAS VERY LITTLE RECORD ON RECREATIONAL USE. PEOPLE DONT CHANGE, SO IM SURE THERE WERE PLENTY OF REC USERS. AND IS IT REALLY TRUE THAT IT KILLS TAPE WORM? OR DID THEY JUST BELIEVE THAT? GREAT READ!
