Grow Diary: It's Helpful To Change Bulbs When Switching To Flower!-)

I remembered something very important today while in Canna-Curate Chat...I didn't change the bulb from Metal Halide to High Pressure Sodium!

The bulb on the right is the Metal Halide(used for vegetation) and the bulb on the left is the High Pressure Sodium(used for flowering). YES, I have socks over my hands. There is a lot of debate in the HID community about oil affecting the bulbs and I just play it safe and cover my hands to prevent oil touching the bulbs because these bulbs are not cheap and I want them to last as long as possible.

The most interesting part of the HPS lights vs the MH is the light output! The HPS lights are so much brighter! The light actually needs to be moved up because the lux count is so high(around 80,000 lux will cause plant beaching).

The lux meter is reading 73900(need to multiply the meter number by 100) and some plants can be negatively affected at the 75000 lux range. These two strains(Steem OG and Black Sugar) are new to me so be safe I want to stay in the 50k to 60k range for the HPS Light. The goal for the MH was around 28 to 30k.

The difference in color

Here are two screen shots of the HPS color vs the MH.

For Flowering: High Pressure Sodium(HPS)

For Vegetation: Metal Halide(MH)

Waiting the extra 6 hours to work on the grow was a tough task(today is the first day of flower). I am glad I remembered to change the bulb. Now I need to do a nutrient change out and make sure the training of the limbs is going accordingly.

These big mothers look very hungry mate, how much power do they use?
Bong on bro. :-)

These are 600 Watt HID Lights for a 4' by 4' by 80'' grow tent.

·
·

I am trying to grow on a very very tight Budget - using only 9 Watt and 24 Watt Full Spectrum Light Bulb. We will see how I do. Plants seem to growing ... but Slowly.

The bulb on these hps/mh truly do make a difference, I only used a 400 watt one before but my buddy only uses hps/mh and he says the same never touch the bulb.

·

I've read arguments on both sides about the bulbs and touching but I'd rather be safe than sorry when it pertains to the longevity of the bulbs considering their price.

6 hours working on anything is hard task. But, your effortst will be rewarded for sure.
Love the purplish note on leaves.

·

That purple on the right plant in the the bottom picture is a 45W LED shining on the plants. I think the Black Sugar Strain has more sativa than the Steem OG's and it doesn't grow as Bushy so I have the main grow light at an angle and then used that LED to supplement. Now that I have switched over to HPS....I don't really need the LED in there. The LED is over the clones now outside of the tent.

Nice grow @toker! I envy your irrigation system, very organized! Those bulbs are 600w? And what size is the tent? You got big healthy plants there I bet they will explode now flowering :)

·

Yep, 600 Watts. [This is Grow Light I am using]. This is a 4ft by 4dt by 80 inch Grow Tent. I think they are about to explode too. I have been trying to train them to more towards the middle because i don't want to run out of height.

·
·

Cool, man nice set up, my new tent is same size but i'm still thinking going with 400 Watts HPS again. My goal with this new tent is exactly having more height, and space for better heat control. I've issues with that before, training them towards the middle helps a lot

I have seen lots of success pictures with a 400 Watt HPS in these tents. My fan runs 24/7 in there and somehow I am able to maintain 70 but I also run two duct to bring in fresh air and take air our. I think they push around 140 cfm. Thanks for the assurance on training them towards the middle!. Gives me some piece of mind.

FYI groupon currently has an offer for two of those bulbs for basically the price of 1. Just thought I would let you know after seeing your post. Cause that is a good deal.

·

That is a good deal! I will have to look over there. Thanks for the heads up.

Us stoners have to stick together, shit this can get expensive.

I always used a MH during the flowering process too.. I had 4 -1000w HPS bulbs agnes 1- 600w MH in the flowering room to get a complete spectrum

·

I have read of others doing this too but have never tried it myself. It does make sense to me though.

Hahaha socks on hands! You crack me up dude! Well as thes say, as long as it works its not important how it looks.

·

It was so much easier to grab some socks than walk out to the shed and grab a pair of gloves lol.

Do you need an aircon on constantly with a setup like this? I've always thought that is the case that is why I've never wanted to grow indoors with Metal halide or HPS. Quantum boards sound cool cause they are low power and low heat, but I know nothing comes close to an HID.

·

I run an intake and outtake duct fan that move 240 Cubic Feet a minute. The formula I use for air movement is Air Volume = (Grow Room Length x Grow Room Width x Grow Room Height)(1.25). This room should have at least 132 CFM air flow. There will be about 25% loss in efficiency and is why the 1.25 is in the formula).

I also run an oscillating fan to help the stems grow stronger.

I have been contemplating making the move to COB Led's but I will probably just add them slowly.

·
·

Thanks!

You can really see the difference in light spectrum with them. That's awesome you have the lux meter to get the light at just the right distance - lookin good! :)

·

The lux meter is a newer purchase for this grow. It is a goal this year to add new tools to my arsenal and this has been my favorite new tool so far. It is pretty amazing how much color difference there is in the lights.

Oh my!!!... those are huge bulbs, you´ll definitely be harvesting huge too! Congratulations for the first flowers. I´ll be watching the growth! Cheers!

·

Thanks @indaymers. This is day 6 of flower so I am hoping to see some flowers in the week 3 timeframe.

Just what I was thinking these days, what is better... these over LED...

·

I would say the community is starting to lean towards led's because of the wider spectrums they provide but there are still growers that swear by HID lighting.
