Intro: Live to Tell

Life has its weird ways of reminding us that only few are immortal. Most of us aren’t.

I love music. I love rock. I love techno. I love lo-fi. I have a pretty eclectic taste in music and while I wouldn’t ever admit it publicly, definitely not on the blockchain, I can at times even be heard listening to Adele at the Royal Albert Hall or Sting Live in Berlin. Just as well as to the Flying Pickets, a great British a capella band.

Keith Richards, not in the #agingchallenge

Music is part of my life. At heart, I’m a rocker. A metal head even. Maybe also a closet goth.

Seeing artists I enjoy pass away is part of my life. At least has become part of it ever more as I’m reaching the second half of life too. Of course, it always was part of it.

Freddie Mercury. Hillel Slovak. Kurt Cobain. More recently, David Bowie and this week Keith Flint.

Why can’t we all be like Iggy, Ozzy, and Keef. I would add Jerry Lee Lewis to the list too, but he recently suffered a minor stroke.

Yet, all lived to tell the multiple stories. Queue Jack Nicholson and late Hunter S. Thompson as well. Their substance use is part of the myth they are, no matter whether nowadays they’re health freaks like Anthony Kiedis or not.

The myth they have become.

“...there are times when the truth is necessary and times when myth-making is necessary. When you’re talking about rock’n’roll, myth-making is what it’s all about. Who wants to know the fucking truth about Jimi Hendrix? We want to know the myth. We want to know he got on that plane to England with that electric guitar, acne cream and pink hair curlers - that’s all he brought.”
— Nick Cave, 2008 interview

This week’s news of Keith Flint’s passing away got me thinking. Thinking about the many parties and concerts I heard those tunes at. The number of times I stood next to speakers and had the bass cleaning the wax out of my ears, just before hitting that moshpit again. Invaders must die.

And, of course, what substances were most prevalent when. And with what music.

Personally, I’ve gone through stages. I discovered Es way before I had my first toke. I was young, started clubbing and it was the thing “kids did in clubs”. I’ve sat through several raids before I toked my first joint. Even took some trips too before that first joint.

As I grew older — marijuana finally became a regular thing in life — I started to differentiate. Working in Amsterdam was the exception, where else will you ever party to some great deep techno and have some pills, only to later stand at the bar while having a toke with your mates? Nowhere, of course. Nowhere but in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands were also where I discovered trance. Trance and shrooms. A perfect match and one I’ve lived several times when partying. I was one of many thousands lucky ones to be there for Tiesto’s first InnerCity at RAI Amsterdam. Yes, I’m an old timer... I did say second half of life. Sue me.

Joints?

Anywhere I’ve been they became the compulsory, and obvious, company for Dancehall and Dubstep parties. whoomp whoomp

It was a fun evolution. I discovered and started appreciating dancehall in Germany. While working in a club with as main event of the month a psytrance party. It was short after the millenium and MCs had started to invade also clubs. Of course, Germany had a thriving hip-hop scene. It all seemed to be a perfect match. Hip-hop, MCs, and dancehall. Eventually, we combined most styles and MCs and dancehall became a regular thing on the first Friday of every month.

But we never landed Seeed as a performer. Although some months before they were in town.

Dubstep came a little later for me. In yet another country. In the north of England. A poor formerly industrial town in Lancashire. Preston.

Music runs through my veins, just like using does through my blood. But, nowadays, I’m more of a Kiedis than a Richards. Well, with the exception of those joints.

Why we’re here. Because we’re not immortal.

TrippyContest3: Your Music Trips

Share in a post which music and substances are your perfect match. Include videos, or preferably even playlists, for the combination.

Any combo works, creativity and/or story telling highly recommended. There is no need to share other substances, marijuana alone is entirely fine! But, of course, do not feel limited either. ;)

Let the music play / Rock on !

·

🤘🏻 love the shirt bro.

·

That shirt’s taking me back to 13/14yrs old. When I discovered rock and metal. Related: Motörhead and Iron Maiden. Next came the grunge era, although The Cure I discovered just before grunge.

·

You shall be one of the referees, as a member of our tribe council and donor.

·
·

I am honored to be one of your Tribe Council.

Cool story man an great contest. Definitely resmoking!

and while I wouldn’t ever admit it publicly, definitely not on the blockchain, I can at times even be heard listening to Adele at the Royal Albert Hall or Sting Live in Berlin.
Haha this reminded me of when my friend "confessed" to me that he likes a Justin Bieber song Love Yourself and his face when my response was "yeah its not bad" haha. Like he was confused and reliefed because I didn't make fun of him xD
·

Now, let's have a constructive criticism about his music, JB. If you take a look at the targeted population that is meant to listen to his music, the amount of them that actually do, you will see that the music is perfectly made to fit this audience.

It is getting easily singable and without any deep meaning. So, to be honest I think he's making quality music for his type of audience.

·
·

I’m just going to say SAW (Stock, Aitken, Waterman). Especially 80s SAW.

That also in reply to the non-bass whoop referenced further. No wonder I discovered (hard) rock and eventually the “exquisitely morose” The Cure as a young adolescent.

·
·

Wouldn't know really, I've only heard a couple of them that were on the radio. But the first image when he blew up was meant for teenage girls, at least I got that impression. So it was subject to ridicule to anyone that isn't actually a girl and were called gay of course. You would know that fellow countryman xD

·
·
·

Yes, but look at it from the marketing perspective as that is the only thing tht drives that kind if producers. Music for money, and it is successful.

Have you ever wondered why?
Have a look at this. Milenial whoop.

·
·
·
·

I kinda now too much about these patterns, melodies, and tonalities and their psychological effects heh. But I'm confused how did we get to that from people bashing people for listening to "gay music" :P

·
·
·
·
·

I like to digress from time to time. MC get side-tracked easily. Do you know reference btw?

·
·
·
·
·
·

Hahaha yeah, that dude is a legend, Jon Lajoie, right?

·
·
·
·
·
·
·

Yeah...pure gold. Makes me proud of just wanting to be Canadian. High as fuck...spot on.. everyday normal guy, wtf, genitals, i kill people...
Need more of quality/parody music.
Speaking of...Weird Al...he is in there with J.L...is longer on scene so more popular, but creative as much as J.L.

·
·
·
·
·

I wouldn’t know the genre but AFAIK “gay music” is Queen and early era [trying to vie for USA popularity which massively backfired] David Bowie?

If that’s the case then I don’t just listen to “gay music”but also am. Not sure where I would fit in JB though, don’t think I recognize any of his since I don’t listen to radio or charts, but love me some good Justin. Justin at Madison Square Garden is an awesome performance. And he’s a stellar performer too.

·

Thanks. Hopefully we also see a contribution by you. ;)

Yeah, that’s a figure of style I’m totally addicted to. :D

·
·

Maybe I will, no promises :P

The best will win the contest!

·

Why wouldn't you take part? It is a great inspiration and chance to earn something while contributing to quality material.

·

Get in there, man! Follow that call by @psyceratopsb!

·
·

I will!

I love music, all kinds. Exploring and reading about types and genres, subgeners. Melody, notes, flow, beats, breakbeats.

From technical death metal, old school hip hop, horror hop, triphop, zenonesque, HC, speed metal, experimental, trance, dpsy, hitech...
Can't wait to see, learn and find out what you people are hiding.

Awesome Contest. Will be sure to engage as much as I can...

·

Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead are very high on my last.fm all time count. Björk too.

Oh I could go on for hours. Days even. And it would include Grandmaster Flash too.

I lovelove your contests and I fought against demons & time to take part in it. Had to write 67% of it without COFFEE! Here you go: https://smoke.io/contest/@mayb/trippycontest3-from-grief-to-anger-to-love-finiding-myself-in-music

Thanks for those wonderful Initiatives!

Nice to get your story @unnamed. Thanks for hosting, here is my entry 🔆

·

Nope, not too late. Still some hours left. Also still waiting for Binaural Beats to submit.

Would love to talk about music, but it will have nothing to do with Cannabis :(

·

Have a look at the contest again.
Do you smoke weed, what music you like while you time? Had cannabis influenced your taste in music? Music about cannabis, on cannabis?

Lsd, psilocybin... Not straight niche.. But if you followed the contest series you would understand why...anyways, do entry till tommorow...

I'll be in vacation all week but I'll try to get something together for this. Awesome stories man. I too have very diverse taste in music. But was a metal head all through high school and still to this day 🤘🏻

Keith passing was very sad. I have a couple of prodigy albums on vinyl I had to bust out.

Fun fact, I was reading somewhere the other day apparently the first lyrics he ever wrote after joining the prodigy were "I'm a fire starter, twisted fire starter."

·

It took me some time to chose which track, firestarter was the other option. Purposely kept that time very brief because knowing myself I would otherwise have ended up listening for hours and hours first. Not to mention a probable slip to Pendulum too.

Hope you find time to contribute! 🤘

Are you still collecting for your contest?

·

Of course. Runs whole week, until next Saturday.

Any format welcome, so if you want to do it vlog style that totally works. 🦇

Or did you mean rewards? People have just been chipping in in the comments. I just add them to the post lol.

·

This is a reminder to @prettynicevideo that she has time till tommorow, Monday to participate. Hope she gets time...

Canna gots 100 smoke on it as well! Cool deal guys.

·

Thanks, man! Have updated the post. :)

I am pondering whether or not to participate...

·

Obviously I’m biased but I see no reason why you shouldn’t.

Aside from each post being a target for upsmokes... there’s SMOKE to be had. The winner gets 6x what a top 20 witness makes in a day.

Finally I managed to get my entry in on time. Super cool contest. Took me down the memory lane, thanks to everyone who made this possible
